In traditional Chinese folklore and Taoist culture, the Mountain Spirit (Shan Gui)​ is not a ghost, but a powerful, righteous deity and the personification of the mountain’s soul. Revered for centuries, this spirit was seen as the ultimate guardian of the wilderness, protecting travelers from peril and warding off unseen dangers. During the Qing Dynasty, artisans began minting these unique square-hole coins as physical vessels for this protective energy. Today, we reinterpret this artifact as a piece of wearable history—a tribute to humanity’s timeless need for guardianship.

The charm is rendered in a deep cinnabar-red hue, a color historically associated with festivity, vitality, and the sacred boundaries of ancient rituals. It is accented by a vibrant yellow sulfur bead, whose golden glow mirrors the sun and evokes the warmth of harvest and vitality in folk symbolism. The structure itself—a circle with a square hole—represents the ancient cosmological model of “Round Heaven, Square Earth.” Surrounding the center are the Bagua trigrams, an ancient code mapping the harmony of the universe, grounding the wearer in a sense of order and balance.
